outline of research paper

I. Introduction
My argument is "Does athletics play a positive or negative effect on athlete's academics?" I chose this topic because there are positive and negative effects and a lot of people have studied this topic before. My thesis is "Athletics provides many benefits for most student-athletes, including a positive outcome in their academics." I find it hard to chose just positive or just negative in this argument because it can go both ways.

II. Explanation
After my introduction of explaining my argument and stating my claim, I will talk about the positive effects on students academics.

1. You must have good grades and good attendance in order to be provided the benefit of athletics in most schools.
2. Being an athlete will keep you in line and out of trouble. Playing a sport is a priority and many athletes take their sport seriously.  Most athletes will chose their sport over most things. i.e. Not going out over the weekend because you have practice or a tournament. It keeps you busy!
3.

Then I will talk about the negative effects on students academics  through my counterclaims.

1.
2.
3.

Citing in MLA style

The citing in the first paper has some similarities and some differences from the the second paper. In the first paper, when the author quotes something he puts the authors and and the page number in parenthesis. In so e cases the authors name was in the quote or paper and it was unnecessary to have the authors name in parenthesis. When he quoted 4 or more lines he indented the quote 1 inch. If the author isn't given to quote he used the title instead. He work cited page is double spaced and alphabetized by the authors last name.
In the second paper, when a source is quoted in another source, the secondary source and date are in the first set if parenthesis and the page number are in the second. When an in-text quote is cited, she used the authors last name, the publication date, and the page number and she put it in parenthesis. Her quotation of 40+ words was indented 5-7 spaces. Her work cited page was very similar to his, it was double spaces and alphabetized by authors last name.

Research Paper Topic

My field and study of interest is Exercise Science so I thought of a few topics that I may be interested in writing about and came up with:
-How have ESPN and other media sources influenced (positively or negatively) professional sports in the past few years?
-The essentials of sports training
-The influence that sports has on athlete's academics

I want to try and find good sources on athletes and academics because it is a well known argument and I think that it is a broad topic that is interesting and important in my field. There are good and bad impacts on athletes academics which allows me to be able to expand my thoughts on my sources that I find. Many research questions can come about this topic and they can all relate.

Research Question thoughts:
(Impacts on Athlete's Academics)
-financial commitments
-promotion
-student recruitment
-social and physiological opportunities
-improved social skills
-improved academic achievement

Writing Within Kinesiology
Kinesiology is the study of health and human performances; within this major you can specifically study sports administration or exercise science. With a degree in health and human performance you can acquire a job as a physical therapist, physical education teacher, a personal trainer or an athletic trainer. Kinesiologists are required to understand, communicate and share their research and knowledge of their studies to not only their patients but to other doctor’s as well. When choosing a profession in this field it is important to recognize the requirements that you must attain. Although you may not know, writing plays a certain role within kinesiology and in kinesiology, writing is based on certain techniques. Examples of these writings include research projects, lab reports, case study articles, medical notes, and patient recommendations.
When writing in kinesiology it is important to know your purpose, and who you audience is so that you can chose the correct genre, stance and media for your particular writing. Your audience will most likely be your patients or other doctors researching the same topic. In research projects your purpose is to research and gain knowledge on a particular topic and report your findings. In some cases, you may test your research or use it to support your ideas and understandings in health and human performance. The genre you chose depends on the purpose of your writing. In a case study article or a lab report you must include an abstract, background information, a purpose, different methods, the results, and your discussion or opinion on the study.
It is important to be knowledgeable with your stance, and make sure that your attitude fits the genre of your paper. It is important to think in positive terms if you are a personal or athletic trainer because your job is to help encourage and boost confidence in health and human performance. So your attitude in any patient recommendations needs to be positive and encouraging. The media varies with writing in kinesiology, but in a medical note or patient recommendation you may use diagrams to explain exercises for rehabilitation or to explain an injury.
Lara Pro states, “Another particular writing that is done as a personal or athletic trainer is advertisement. It is necessary that you advertise yourself and your knowledge so that you can gain more clientele.” Lara uses Instagram, Twitter, and other social medias to advertise herself. She also is a distributor of a productcalled Advocare, which is a 24-day challenge to help cleanse yourself and start eating healthier meals. This helps her because this is an informal writing that she can produce to allow her followers to be comfortable with exercising and their own bodies. Advertising is important in this profession because it is an informal writing that allows you to share what you know through your own experiences. “It can create a trusting bond between you and your clientele,” Lara says.
Although there is not a huge difference in writing for bachelors, masters and doctorate degree there are a few differences like the style or genre. If you are perusing a bachelor’s degree, not a lot of writing is done. Yes, there are research papers that are required but most of the work is done hands on. “I did more labs when I was getting my bachelor degree.” Lara agrees that there are more “hands on” activities.Writing as a graduate in this field is more research, and knowing the knowledge without research. Lara claims that critiquing is a big step up from studying in this profession as an undergraduate. She also states that your word choice must be advanced and you need to know all of the terms that are important to know within this profession. When writing research papers it is important to use various, correct, reliable sources without using the Internet and sometimes your own opinion.

This is all I have for now, I still need to add more quotes from my interviews and cite my sources.

Class discussion

-academic sources and scholarly sources are very similar but scholarly sources are a peer reviewed academic sources
-my group developed a list of important aspects that are needed in all of the sources we find relevant to our field of study
     1. Expectations
     2. Comparisons
     3. Examples
     4. Reliable resources
     5. The source needs to be written by a reliable author in your field of study
-when finding academic sources, you can search for aspects related to your topic and not just specifically  your topic because any academic information is useful as long as it is relevant to your topic
-I have found 3 of my sources, I still have to find one more academic source and I plan on using our list of important aspects to find a good scholarly article.
-when you organize your paper; you should use your written sources as facts and examples and apply quotes from those sources, and you should use your interview sources to explain and engage on the information you gathered from your written sources.

Source summary

One of my sources is about writing in Kinesiology, which is a more broad term for my field in exercise science. This source is a webpage to explain to future kids that want  to study in the field of kinesiology. It explains the expectations of kinesiologist, it explains what kinesiology is and its different fields like; athletic training, physical education, exercise science, and therapeutic exercise and rehabilitation. It  also shows you examples of different lab reports, and injury plans, and explains how they are written and formatted. It also talks about the differences within a Bachelors degree, a masters degree, and a doctorate degree. explaining the different requirements and objectives of writing in each degree. This webpage is a lot like our informational report, it was made for students looking into kinesiology as their major and will be a very helpful source for me when writing my informational report!

Interview summary

I interviewed Lara Pro who is a graduate from Louisville that studied exercise science and now an athletic and personal trainer. I asked her what were the different kinds of writings that required for her profession and she said; research projects, reflective papers, advocacy papers, summary papers, and some medical notes of injured patients. She also told me that advertising is huge for yourself. Its not a usual type of writing but you have to sell yourself, your knowledge, and your skills to get patients in order to make your earnings. I asked her what the difference was in writing for a Bachelor's degree, Master's degree, and a Doctorate? She told me that the style of writing at a graduate level is different. When research papers are done as a graduate you have to support ideas without using your own opinion. Sophisticated language and grammar must be used and APA format is required. Also in these research papers you must use multiple, correct sources not using the internet. She said to be to the point and not drag ideas out, be straight to the point .Another question I asked her was if she had any tips or guidelines for writing in this profession? She told me that accuracy is very important and that you need to know your sources, write more than one draft ALWAYS and make sure you have correct language and grammar. The last question I asked her was is writing in exercise science different from writing in other fields and she said that it's a lot like other writings but she said every field has a different goal to reach in their curriculum. As an athletic trainer you do have to diagnose which means you have to review injuries and write up plans, which can be a different type of writing from other fields.

Interview questions

1. What kinds of writing do you do within your profession?
2. What is the difference between writings for a Bachelor's degree, a master's degree, and a Doctorate  degree?
3. What tips or guidelines do you have for writing in this particular profession?
4. Do you have any advice or comments about taking this field into consideration as a profession? (In terms of writing.)

Writing in Kinesiology

My first written source for my informational report is called "Writing in Kinesology." Although my profession will be athletic training, it falls under the subject if kinesiology and I got a lot of good information about the different types of writing in my future profession. I feel like this source that I chose has multiple genres but overall I would say its kind of like a blog. It has a lot of different aspects in it like what Kinesology is, the different types, the different types of writing afflicted with Kinesology and examples of the different types of writing. At the end it even has an interview about different writings in kinesiology from someone in that profession.

I think that this source will be very helpful to my paper because it explains and gives a lot of information of writing in my profession. It gives examples of the different types of writing done in my profession like research papers, lab reports, reflective papers, advocacy papers, short essays, summaries, and medical notes. It also has other links to other pages that might go into more detail on a certain field or have an example of something so that I can better understand what their point is. The purpose of this source is a lot like the purpose of our paper and I think that it will be a very helpful and reliable source.

Rhetorical Situation of Assignment 1

My first assignment for English 102 is an informational report. The purpose of this report is to increase the awareness of what a specific profession involves. My profession is going to be athletic training so my audience is going to be a group of high school students that are interested in becoming an athletic trainer. I will need to analyze and explain the responsibilities  that are required for a athletic trainer and I will also need to use different types of sources such as an interview and academic sources to support my understandings. The genre of this assignment will be a report that will include researched source material in a formal language. My stance should be persuading and informational towards my audience. My media and design will probably just be print but in some reports diagrams and photographs are used to help illustrate the knowledge you are presenting.

One question I had about this assignment was that the guideline says that you need one interview and 3 written sources but it also says that you need at least 2 academic and 2 non-academic, so for the written sources do we need 3 or 4?

Rhetorical Situation Analysis

My rhetorical situation analysis is on a personal narrative that I wrote in my English 101 class last semester called "Finding Your Comfort." My purpose of this writing was to express and explain my fears. I explained situations that had happened to me as a child like vacuuming while no one was home because I couldn't hear if someone was breaking in or hearing kidnappings on the news while my parents were watching it. These situations are what caused my fears and another influence on what I feared was the movie "Taken" which I used as a source to help explain my fears in this paper. My audience was my professor and a few classmates that had to peer review my paper. After reading and learning about audience, I think that I should have had a little more detail in this paper to help them understand my situations and why I was scared of being kidnapped. Since this paper was an assignment, the genre was required to be typed in MLA format. I cited my sources at the end of my paper because that was required as well. In this paper I don't think I expressed much of a stance and I think that it's something that I need to work on. I don't put much emotion or attitude into my writings. I wrote my paper based solely on the requirements so I didn't have much of an attitude toward my writing. My medium was print because again, that's what was required. I wrote five paragraphs about what my fears are and what situations caused them when I was younger. As far as rhetorical situation goes I think that my strong components are purpose, genre, and media. My weaker components are audience and stance.

Syllabus

I don't have a whole lot of questions or concerns about this classes syllabus but just a few. I know of the 4 major assignments, few quizzes, and the in-class assignments but are there any tests or finals in this class? Also do you allow or give any extra credit for this course?
I'm not great at turning things in on time but I have set goals for myself this semester and I hope that those will help motivate me in turning my assignments in on time and asking questions if I don't understand something. In this case I am glad that you don't accept late credit because it will me get in the habit of having my assignment ps done and turned in on time! I am also pleased that you allow revision on our major assignments because that will be helpful if I had interpreted the instructions incorrectly and will be able to redo the assignment the right way. Other than that I have no problem with the requirements and expectations on the syllabus.
